Located in the magic triangle where Luxembourg and the Benelux countries border Germany and France, Schengen caught the world's attention in June 1985 when it hosted the historic signing of the \"Schengen Agreement\", formalising the agreement between the original EU countries to abolish border controls between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the mid-point of the Moselle River, which winds its way through the heart of Europe, is a place where three countries meet: Luxembourg, Germany, France. It was here, almost 34 years ago, where the idea of a Europe without borders was born. Many people are familiar with the Schengen Agreement, which allows free movement of people and goods between the 26 member states in Europe. Those with a Schengen Visa can travel freely to more than half the European continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But have you ever stopped and thought about Schengen as a place? Who knows, perhaps you will decide to make this pastoral wine-growing village in Luxembourg your next weekend getaway. As you may have guessed, the Schengen Agreement gets its name from the small village in Luxembourg where the treaty was first signed in June 1985, between Belgium, France, West Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The location in Luxembourg at the tripoint with France and Germany was a symbolic choice, as it's sort of a miniature version of Europe. There was no better place to commit to the idea of open borders than at the junction of three. By doing this, the initial signatories dedicated themselves to their cause and showed what they hoped to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schengen attracts some 50,000 people every year, that even from China and Australia, and has become the poster child for a Europe without borders!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the many different museums, such as the European Museum, which commemorates the signing of the Treaty, the museum \"A Possen\", which deals with wine, folklore and toys, or the Valentiny Foundation, a must fir art lovers, the municipality with its green, hilly landscape, lakes, wine villages, nature reserves (Biodiversum, Haff R\u00e9imech) and gardens also invites you to take a trip in nature. The region offers an exceptional hiking landscape with magnificent views of the Moselle valley, hillside vineyards and exceptional flora and fauna. Not to mention the excellent cuisine and wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What attracts people to Luxembourg year after year? And what do the locals also look forward to? A whole range of events and festivals that are permanently marked on people’s calendars. In summer, it’s not only children who look forward to the Schueberfouer funfair to come around again. <\/p>\n

Many other village fairs and traditional fairs with local and regional delights and loads of fun for the whole family are also held throughout the year. Many music festivals across Luxembourg – like the summer time Blues’n’Jazz Rallye – set the mood for having a great time. Events such as the Museum Night in October bring art, science and history alive. There’s plenty for sports fans, too – like the ING Night Marathon for an athletic tour through the streets of the capital city, and numerous cycle races or trail runs.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
