UNESCO World Heritage Yen Tu, Vinh Nghiem, Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex of Monuments and Landscapes
The ninth UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vietnam: Yen Tu, Vinh Nghiem, Con Son, Kiep Bac Complex of Monuments and Landscapes 🇺🇳🏛️ 🇻🇳
The property comprises 20 sites across forested mountains, lowlands, and river valleys. Centred on the Yen Tu Mountain Range, it was home to the Tran Dynasty during the 13th and 14th centuries and the birthplace of Truc Lam Buddhism, a uniquely Vietnamese Zen tradition that shaped the Dai Viet kingdom. The complex includes pagodas, temples, shrines, and archaeological remains tied to religious and historical figures. Strategically located in geologically favourable settings, it remains a vibrant pilgrimage destination.

Trúc Lâm Yên Tử 竹林安子, or simply Trúc Lâm Bamboo Grove, is a Vietnamese Thiền sect. The school was founded by Emperor Trần Nhân Tông (1258–1308) showing influence from Confucian and Taoist philosophy. Trúc Lâm's prestige later waned as Confucianism became dominant in the later imperial court.
Con Son Mountain looks like a resting lion. With a shrine on the top, its 238m northern ridge adjoins Ngu Nhac Mountain. Con Son borders U Bo Mountain and a valley with bamboo hedges to the west. Next to it is the 72-peak Phuong Hoang (phoenix) mountain range with its vast pine forests, sparkling streams, rugged cliffs and ancient towers and pagodas. [vietnamtourism.org.vn]

Located on the top of Yen Tu Mountain, 1068m above sea level, Dong Pagoda is a particularly sacred spiritual destination for visitors from all over the world. After a long climb with much effort and determination to reach the top of the mountain, everyone is extremely excited. That is why when learning about Dong Pagoda, visitors admire even more the workers who contributed to the construction of the project from the 17th and 18th centuries until now. [vietnam.vn]

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites are places of importance to cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972. Vietnam accepted the convention on 19 October 1987, making its natural and cultural sites eligible for inclusion on the list. As of 2025, there are nine World Heritage Sites in Vietnam, including six cultural sites, two natural sites, and one mixed. Vietnam holds the second-highest number of World Heritage Sites in Southeast Asia, after Indonesia with ten sites.
