Uzbekistan the Silk Road
Named for its lucrative trade in silk, the Silk Road traversed several of Uzbekistan's major cities, including Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. These would see the exchange of spices and precious gems as well as silk, but also the interchange of artistic and cultural ideas.

Samarkand is one of four cities in Uzbekistan benefitting from a renewed interest in the Silk Road, with Afrosiyob, a new high-speed rail network linking its minarets and turquoise-blue tiling with the country's capital of Tashkent—and more. Routes to Khiva, 2024's tourism capital of the Islamic world, will come online next year.
While Samarkand’s minarets and turquoise-blue tiling are hallmarks of regal Timurid architecture – evident in the towering monoliths of Registan Square – Bukhara is the site of beguiling mosque complexes and age-old rug-making traditions. In Tashkent, the host of FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024™ (from 14 September to 16 October 2024), heritage is combined with a more cosmopolitan verve, and Swissôtel is slated to open its first property here in 2024.

For centuries, traders journeyed along the ancient Silk Road, weaving westwards from China to Iran and Turkey, sharing their stories and cultures alongside textiles, tea, and perfume. Today, four cities in Uzbekistan – Samarkand, Tashkent, Bukhara, and Khiva – are benefitting from renewed interest in this historic route. Explorers may once have had to contend with long, arduous journeys on camel-back, but new Afrosiyob high-speed trains have become a lifeline linking Tashkent, the country’s capital, to Samarkand and Bukhara. In 2024, this 600-kilometre rail network will extend to Khiva, making it even easier to explore Uzbek Silk Road cities.
Khiva, the latest rail stop, has also been declared 2024’s tourism capital of the Islamic world, perfectly positioning it to showcase the mud-and-straw walls and impeccably preserved fortifications of Itchan Kala, a UNESCO-certified inner city with over 50 historic monuments.
Uzbekistan is a hot, dry, landlocked country. It is one of two doubly landlocked countries in the world, the other being Liechtenstein. In addition, due to its location within a series of endorheic basins, none of its rivers lead to the sea. Less than 10% of its territory is intensively cultivated irrigated land in river valleys and oases, and formerly in the Aral Sea, which has largely desiccated in one of the world's worst environmental disasters. The rest is the vast Kyzylkum Desert and mountains.
The Republic of Uzbekistan includes 12 regions and the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan. Each corner of Uzbekistan attracts with its features. In Tashkent, you can take a walk in the most beautiful metro in the world or see the most ancient manuscript – the Koran of Usman. In the historical cities included in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List – Samarkand, Bukhara, Shakhrisabz and Khiva, you can visit the most ancient architectural monuments that have preserved echoes of past eras. In the southernmost part of the country – Surkhandarya, you can travel through mountain gorges or see the ruins of the ancient cities near Termez.Depending on the time of year, you can go skiing in the foothills of the Tien Shan or climb the highest point of Big Chimgan.
