This is why you should always leave a shoe in the hotel safe when you’re on holiday

One of the biggest issues when it comes to holidaying abroad is the worry of losing, or forgetting your PASSPORT!

Forgetting it on the way there would be pretty dire, but leaving your passport behind on the way back would arguably be even worse. And while taking protective measures like storing valuables in the hotel safe are of course recommended during your stay away, they can actually cause more harm than good when you go to check out. British Airways flight attendant Ty Opoku Adjei revealed to Business Insider that the number of people who forget their passport because they leave it in the hotel safe is surprisingly high. ‘When we go on holiday, it’s natural to want to keep your valuables in the hotel room safe,’ the flight attendant explained. She added however that some people ‘make it all the way to the airport only to realise they’ve left their passport in the safe.’

This is a pretty devastating possibility, but there are ways to ensure you remember to ransack the safe and pick up your belongings prior to check out, one of which Ty swears by. The flight attendant recommends leaving a single shoe from a pair in the safe along with your passport.

Confused? We were too. But when you hear the reason behind this niche tip, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

‘My top tip is to keep one of your shoes you plan to wear on your journey home in the safe,’ she explains. ‘If you do this, you’ll never leave the hotel room without checking the safe ever again… as long as you don’t forget where you put your shoe, of course!’ Genius!

So next time you go to pop your passport in the safe nice and securely, throw the sandal, trainer or pump you plan to wear for your return journey in there too. You’ll definitely thank Ty when you go to retrieve it!

"Put your shoe in the safe right behind your jewelry so that when it’s time to pack and leave your hotel you never leave your valuables behind because you’ll always be looking for that second shoe..."
