Sapa is an ideal location for summer getaway from the heat, thanks to its high altitude. The climate of Sapa is highly seasonal, with a subtropical climate in the summer and a temperate climate during the winter. While the most humid months are July and August, December and January are the coldest ones. The winter would be the best season for it since Sapa becomes frozen, foggy, drizzly, and snowy in some years on the highest peaks, though you can visit Sapa all year round. The four seasons are distinctly felt in Sapa as nature changes its costume. While seeds of pear, peach, apricot, and plum litter Sapa in the spring, summer is fully blooming of pancakes, dahlias, sunflowers, and various fruits. Autumn is the season for fragrance mushrooms and woods, with plenty of medicinal plant species. The sky is vividly brightened with golden sun-rays and playful white clouds which seem to land on the ground, over the heads of people, or on the tops of trees. In winter, Sapa is covered with fog, which makes the countryside more mysterious and enticing.

Northwest Vietnam, with its rocky, cone-like mountains, high vistas and deep valleys, encompasses some of the most extreme geography in the country – if not all of Southeast Asia. Travelling to the more remote parts of the region takes time and effort, but those short on either can stick around Sapa, the surrounding hills of which are a microcosm of the region as a whole. Sapa town stands at the head of a deep valley of magnificent rice terraces that are still farmed today as they have been for centuries. Backdrops don’t get much more spectacular. Enticing ribbons of road lead the eye down to the valley floor, white-water rivers rush among rice fields, and lush green mountains stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see. The highest peak in the region, Mount Fansipan, crowns the ragged ridge line high above town.

The Northwest is known as a road full of emotions, with the characteristics of rugged mountains, the pass roads are the highlight for the majesty of the Northwest mountains. One of the most dangerous passes in the Northwest mountains and forests, it is impossible not to mention the O Quy Ho pass. O Quy Ho Pass holds the record for length in the Northwest mountains of Vietnam, with a length of up to nearly 50 km, known as the «King of the Northwest Pass». Located at an altitude of more than 2000m in the midst of immense mountains and clouds, the pass appears soft, stretching like a silk strip bending close to the steep cliffs. O Quy Ho Pass is also known as Hoang Lien Pass, Hoang Lien Son Pass because the pass crosses the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.

In addition to the road fascinated by the continuous bends of the sleeve, O Quy Ho is also attractive in the huge difference in temperature on the two sides of the pass. If visitors are suffering from the warm, dry heat of the western slopes of Hoang Lien mountain range in Lai Chau, they will be pleasantly surprised when crossing the top of the Heaven Gate pass of O Quy Ho to receive the always humid and warm breeze, cool side of Sapa, Lao Cai. Coming to majestic pass O Quy Ho in winter, if we are lucky, we can admire a rare sight in Vietnam that is snowflakes and ice phenomenon.

Khau Pha Pass in Mu Cang Chai district, the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, is an attractive destination. The pass stuns travelers with its beautiful and poetic scenery, where high mountains stand on one side and the other side is a deep valley covered with fluffy white clouds around the year. Located at an altitude of over 1200 meters above sea level, Khau Phạ has a temperate weather year-round like Da Lat, but the temperature is much lower due to its position in the subtropical region. In the winter, there may be temperatures below zero degrees, when snow covers over the pass.
